Welcome Mai Ton, HelloSign's New VP of People!

Mai Ton at HelloSign

We’re so excited to announce our newest hire, Mai Ton as VP of People!

Mai joins the HelloSign team with over 15 years of experience in people operations, and her passion for building an incredible team is crystal clear. Not only does Mai have a proven record of successfully overcoming challenges and scaling, she’s also oozing empathy — something HelloSigners hold near and dear to our hearts.

Mai joins us from OneLogin, where she led all aspects of the company’s people strategy, including recruiting, employee engagement, talent management, culture, HR Ops, learning & development and much more. Before OneLogin, Mai was at Trulia, where she built the entire team and HR function for the company in preparation for their IPO. And that’s not all — Mai has won an astounding 14  awards in her mission to build great places to work.

In partnership with the executive team, Mai aims to attract, train, and retain talent as HelloSign scales to meet Enterprise demand. Her high effort work involves building alignment and cohesion among executives, giving employees a voice, and fostering an environment of continuous learning.

Instead of doing a traditional introduction post, we thought it might be more fun if we shared a more personal introduction to our new teammate in the Q&A format.

In your experience, what’s the biggest challenge when scaling a team?

Change. Not everyone responds to change in the same way. The secret is being able to communicate across the company so that everyone can understand why things are changing around them and what they can expect. This way, people can mentally prepare for the road ahead.

What are your thoughts on the importance of company culture?

I believe the value of deliberately creating a company culture that fosters inclusion and innovation is becoming a necessity. Culture is the glue that holds everything together.

I believe companies lose some of their most talented employees because of changes in the culture, even if those employees are getting paid well. People want to be valued, inspired, and intellectually challenged at work. We’re seeing more and more companies focus on culture and environment in order to achieve success.

In your 15+ years in HR roles, what’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned?

Building relationships and listening are the two most important skills I’ve learned.

These two things are high effort work, but totally worth the investment. And remember to do this by having a curiosity about the person on the other side. As you share more about your personal life, others will do the same which then builds a very trusting relationship.

When you can truly trust your colleagues, you’d be surprised how much it improves internal communication and fosters big picture thinking.

What excites you the most about joining HelloSign?

I can finally be myself in an organization that values diversity.  A lot of companies talk about diversity, inclusion, and belonging, but don’t always allow you to bring your ‘real’ self to work. It is part of our secret recipe here at HelloSign.

What’s the best advice you ever received?

You have two ears and one mouth, do more listening.

Where do you see HelloSign in 5 years?

HelloSign will be a household brand name where work doesn’t get done without HelloSign.

What’s your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Being a mother to my 9 year old child is my hardest, but most rewarding pursuit. Eating comes in a close second, which I’m learning is a shared passion among my colleagues.

Who would you most like to swap places with for a day and why?

A 3 year old child. Their version of life is so simple and I crave simplicity in our overly complicated world.

Who inspires you?

Working women who balance stereotypes and fight against those stereotypes everyday. It’s really exhausting work, but so good for our shared future.
